How to Apply Glitter Eyeshadow Without Making a Mess

Glitter eyeshadow adds a pop of sparkle to your normal makeup look, but it can be difficult to apply without making a mess. When applied the wrong way, glitter can spread all around your face. To reduce your chances of making a mess, apply your glitter eyeshadow before applying the rest of your makeup. When your eyes are done, clean up any stray pieces of glitter before applying foundation, blush and other products.

Prepare Your Face and Eyelids

Wash your face with a gentle face cleanser, and pat it dry. If you apply moisturizer, avoid your eye area. Wait until your face dries completely before proceeding.
Spread eyeshadow primer over your lids, making sure to cover every corner. Primer helps reduce oil and makes it easier for the glitter eyeshadow to stay in place. Dust a colorless loose powder around the bottom of your eyes to prevent any fallen glitter from sticking. Wipe away this powder after you finish your eye makeup and before you apply the rest of your makeup.

Create an Eyeshadow Base

Apply a cream eyeshadow all over your lid. Use a shade that matches your skin tone for a subtle look, or choose a saturated color for a more dramatic look. The cream helps the glitter particles stay in place. Alternatively, use a small amount of Vaseline or a colorless lip balm.

Prepare the Eyeshadow Brush

Dip your eyeshadow brush gently into water, and blot it with a paper towel until it is just slightly damp. With one hand, hold a tissue or a damp wash cloth underneath your eye, just under your lower lashes. With the other hand, coat the brush with your glitter eyeshadow. Tap the brush against the rim of the eyeshadow container to remove any excess.

Apply the Glitter Eyeshadow

Apply the glitter eyeshadow over the cream base. Hold the brush flat against your eyelid, and use gentle pressure to press the glitter into the cream shadow. Repeat this process over your eyelid until the glitter is set. With the tissue or towel still in place under your eye, use an eyelash comb to remove any glitter that has fallen into your upper or lower lashes. Blink rapidly to release the glitter onto the tissue.

Clean Up Loose Glitter

Fan your face gently with a piece of paper to remove any loose glitter pieces. Remove the tissue, and throw it away. Dip a cotton swab lightly into baby oil or an oil-based makeup remover, and use it to remove any stray pieces of fallen glitter from your cheeks and around your eyes. Apply the rest of your makeup as usual, taking care when working near your eyes.
